Despite his severe disability from multiple sclerosis ( MS in never
capitalized unless using the acronym MS)  Dr. Richard Radtke has successfully
endeavored to keep his dreams within reach. Through the use of a powered
wheelchair and by accessing his computers through the use of head controls,
his career has encompassed a mix of field experiences and laboratory-based
research at both ends of the Poles.  With five years of study in the Arctic
to his credit--and nine in the Antarctic-- Dr. Radtke has used these
experiences to shape the world of oceanography and the way in which the world
defines disability.

Dr. Radtke is considered an authority in fish biology and a leader in three
distinct fields: larval fish ecology, large pelagic fish population ecology,
and Antarctic fish ecology.  He is credited with over 60 publications and
numerous scientific and humanitarian awards.

His diverse experiences have included two trips to the Antarctic, where he was
the first handicapped scientist to accomplish research in what is considered
to be the windiest, coldest place on earth.  He has also completed research
in Thailand, The Philippines, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Spain, Norway,
Germany, Great Britain, The Soviet Union, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland.
Locally, he has led field research on the Big Island and Leeward Oahu.  In
addition to his scientific aptitude, Dr. Radtke has inspired students and
adults through special presentations and work with persons with disabilities.
He has been on the Board of Directors of the Multiple Sclerosis
Society-Hawaiian Islands Chapter, the ALOHA Special Technology Access Center,
Inc., Winners at Work, the Hawaii Center for Independent Living and Easter
Seals of Hawaii.  He has also received two Presidential Commendations for his
efforts.

The scope of Dr. Radtke's efforts in the future will encompass both field
research and his passionate effort to empower others through teaching,
presentations and the programs that bring clarity and purpose to the lives of
others.
