Employment
Dreams Perfected program is proud to report achievements to date:
One of the key achievements to come out of this program is to see
how happy our participants and their family are in pursuing their dreams of
being productive members of the community. On October 1, 2003 six participants
opened the door to abilities. They own and operate their own retail business at
Makaha Market Place. All participants have been diligently working on their
products. Second Time Around Toys +(STAT +) Limited Liability Company (LLC)
will offer their community the opportunity to purchase refurbished and
repackaged toys at below market prices. The inventory is growing daily. They
have enlisted the support of Street Bikers United who will pick up an additional
used toy during their annual Toys for Tots drive in December. All six partners
actively participated in store front set up and are eager to roll out products.
One of the most amazing things in this endeavor is that partners pushed to
incorporate the plus sign because they are dreaming for gaining success in the
initial push to gain assets through refurbished toys but did not want to limit
themselves to toys. The dreams are expanding daily and include computerized
products, crafts and other whole sale products. They are working on consignment
deals that would allow them to share in the profits of local crafters.
Remarkable things are happening and these folks are reaching for the stars. It
is funny when a window is open how much adrenaline is pumped in with ease and
dream start to flourish.
The Kahuku Counterpart is also eagerly producing products for their
shop in Hauula! They are doing things naturally! They spend hours in
discovering the ‘aina looking for things that can become precious items to work
on and sell. STAT+LLC has several items on their shelves produced by these
talented youth. Collected glass has turned into fashion earrings! Broken kukui
nut shells into handmade chokers. Key chains are beautified by small shells.
Rocky pocket friends instantly bring a smile a mile wide. They even have pets
that will brighten up your potted plants. It is all handmade! They are truly
doing incredible stuff on that end of the island.
The other exciting factor in this program is watching participants
enthusiastically rush to computers to improve their skills. One participants
struggles with math in high school and seems to be gaining momentum through the
computer lab. Having the lab available to him after school is improving his
chances of succeeding. We were able to place a computer in the home of one of
our participant who is struggling with getting assignments completed. His
mother called to proclaim an increased in productivity in school work and
couldn’t be more grateful for this opportunity to watch her son succeed. Other
participants are coming into the Sea of Dreams Foundation to support
participants in the STAT+ LLC. The excitement is catching and they are there to
clean and refurbish toys. One participant is happily employed since gaining
access and support from the EDP program. Several participants are enjoying
enrollment at local community colleges. All of these endeavors were made
possible by the EDP program. The EDP program has been a great success and has
allowed the Sea of Dreams Foundation to move forward in attaining our mission’s
goals.
